The mountainous villages of Puerto Rico have always struggled with affordable and reliable energy access, especially since Hurricane Maria hit the island in 2017. The prospect of improvement is dim with limited capital, infrastructure challenges, and the increasing likelihood of intense weather events due to global warming. The price of imported carbon fuels to the island results in electricity costs far above that of the mainland US. Without access to power, quality of life and economic development are extremely limited and immigration from the island is inevitable.
The need to provide reliable, cheap and locally generated energy is urgent and this is where Let’s Share the Sun in partnership with Casa Pueblo steps in!
Let’s Share the Sun develops and installs solar panels and distributes solar lamps in communities of need in Haiti, Honduras, and Puerto Rico. It collaborates with Casa Pueblo, a community organization serving Adjuntas, Puerto Rico, which has installed over 100 systems on residential homes of need in addition to organizing the first solar grid co-op among businesses on the town square. Both Let’s Share the Sun and Casa Pueblo use local resources and installers to help stimulate the economy and develop the workforce of the communities they serve.
What’s the opportunity?
Let’s Share the Sun and Casa Pueblo have identified high-priority households in need of reliable electricity for medical and other basic needs in the small mountain village of Adjuntas, Puerto Rico. Wood Mackenzie will support the project through direct volunteering as well as leveraging its energy expertise to provide knowledge sharing and general awareness, research and professional development, and advisory.
Your donation will support:
Households in rural Puerto Rico with high needs for reliable electricity for such things as refrigerating medications, charging wheelchairs, and running medical equipment.
The transportation and installation of solar panels to high-priority households in Adjuntas. A delegation of university students and Wood Mackenzie volunteers will support this effort.
